Thank you to our recreational and competitive swimmers and families! Your contributions through the Watershow and competitive demo raised $2102 for Bell Let’s Talk Clara’s Big Ride. The club will be making this donation to support youth mental health, in memory of Paul Sokoloski.
Clara Hughes is a 6 time Olympian who faces mental health challenges. She is riding her bike 12,000km through every province and territory in Canada; visiting 95 communities to share her story. Clara’s Big Ride began March 14 in Toronto and concludes July 1 right here in Ottawa, as part of Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill. Clara wants to empower youth to understand what mental health means to them and how they can support others who may be suffering. Beating the stigma is the biggest step. Clara’s hope is that the next generation of Canadians will grow up in a society where there is no stigma associated with mental illness. Mental illness is part of everyone’s life in some way, and has touched members from within our club. It seems most appropriate that we bring this awareness to our swimmers and parents. Our donation will remain locally to focus on youth mental health in Ottawa through Crossroads Children’s Centre.
